Touch Grass

Day trips for the chronically online

Info

Eco excursions for the chronically online. “Touch grass” means to take part in normal activities in the real world rather than online, and it’s often used as an insult for people who spend too much time on their screens (Merriam-Webster). A study of about 19,800 adults in England found that people who spent at least 120 minutes in nature in a week were more likely to report good health and well-being than people who spent none, though the study can’t show cause (Scientific Reports, 2019). Touch Grass is a concept that asks what it would take to turn that insult into an invitation.

Touch Grass takes the phrase at its word and turns it into a service: car-free day trips that leave by public transit and are sold in minutes outside, starting at 120. The identity speaks in phone notifications and puts them outdoors, on paper tickets, subway posters and trip cards. It makes no wellness promises and never calls itself eco; it says what it does. A new trip is three numbers: when it leaves, how long you’re outside, and when you’re back.
